Gabriola Island Recycling Organization

Project Details

Architrave worked with GIRO to develop a plan that included a significant expansion of retail area with potential avenues for other phases in the future. GIRO provides an indispensable service by recycling paper, glass, metal, clothing, and general merchandise.   It is community owned and entirely self-supported through its operations.

GIRO expansion became reality when a gas tax grant to enhance environmental initiatives was awarded. This project brought a broad group of stakeholders together. The Board of Directors, the current employees, volunteers and large group of community users had interests in the expansion of the facility. The first task of the building committee was to hire Architrave.

We worked with this diverse group of people to create a practical building that would facilitate the movement and collection of house wares, furniture, clothing, building materials, bicycles, musical instruments and appliances for resale and for the storage of glass, plastics, metals, card board and paper for recycling.

The 3,000 square foot addition increased the size of the facility by 40%. The flat roof on the addition was designed to enable the inevitability of a future building expansion. Island residents frequent the center regularly, and rely on GIRO for various items, including drop off depot for recyclables.

Not surprisingly GIRO has become a social hubs for the community. The 700 square foot covered outdoor space allows for product display and socializing on rainy days. Its wood-frame construction is clad with corrugated metal siding and resulting in a durable low maintenance building.

Locally milled Douglas fir timbers support a large wrap around covered area. The buildings enclose a large courtyard. Bicycles and building materials are laid out for bargain hunting in good weather.  Roof water is collected and stored in cisterns. The building is sited to facilitate on grade access to both new and existing building. The end result is an entirely appropriate building form that welcomes a slower pace and community interaction.
